Chelsea forward Willian reveals that manager Antonio Conte has kept him positive during a two-month spell on the bench, but he is now ready to reclaim his starting role.

Willian has admitted that he is desperate for his first Premier League start in two months after struggling to break back into Chelsea's first-team ranks.

The Brazil international was unfortunate to drop out of the side at the start of their current nine-game winning run, as he returned home following the death of his mother.

Willian played a key part in the 2-0 win over Hull City on October 1, scoring the crucial breakthrough goal and kickstarting this run of form that has helped the Blues to the top of the table.

Since returning from his compassionate leave Willian has been unable to oust either Pedro or Eden Hazard, who occupy wide forward roles either side of Diego Costa, but with the latter expected to miss out on tonight's trip to Sunderland the 28-year-old is ready to step in.

"The manager changed the team because I was in a difficult moment. I lost my mum and I had to stay in Brazil for a few days," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "I missed some games and the team started to win and play well. Pedro came in and he did very well.

"But the manager talked to me and told me to stay concentrated, to work hard in training and when I come into the game to try to do my best. I feel more fresh and good to come back in the team. He gives me confidence to get back in the team and train hard to play well. I am happy because I came in and helped my teammates to win that game [against Manchester City].

"Sometimes the game is asking to change some things, to put in another player and change the system. The players on the bench have to be focused because, when you go in, you have to do something different."

Willian has scored three goals in 11 league games this term, the latest of which came in the 3-1 win over Manchester City earlier this month.
