Andre Villas-Boas urges Chelsea improvement

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas describes the Champions League as "life and death".

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has urged his team to show "ultimate desire" in the final Champions League group match against Valencia.

The former Porto boss has come under pressure due to a run of disappointing results for the London side.

Despite claiming a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at the weekend, the Blues crashed out of the Carling Cup to Liverpool last night.

While one trophy has slipped out of Villas-Boas's grasp, the former English champions face an early exit from the Champions League.

"The Champions League is a competition that is life and death and this standard won't be enough," Villas-Boas said. "We will need to up the tempo and play that game with the ultimate desire."

Chelsea need to defeat Valencia in order to progress to the knockout stages of the elite tournament.
