Stanislas Wawrinka has progressed into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-3 7-5 victory over Denis Istomin.
Both players held their serve well in the opening games of the first set, but it was the Swiss, who clinched a crucial break point and managed to maintain his lead.
Despite losing a break to Istomin, Wawrinka was able to remain in control with powerful forehands and swift returns to take the lead.
Istomin pushed his opponent in the second set by almost setting up a tie-break, but Wawrinka was able to nab a vital break point to edge in front and finish off the match.
