Joe Simpson crowned Aviva Premiership Player of the Month for April

Joe Simpson wins the final Aviva Premiership Player of the Month award of the season, following a string of impressive showings at Wasps.

Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson has been named as the Aviva Premiership Player of the Month for April.

The 26-year-old follows in the footsteps of teammate Elliot Daly in being named as the top flight's standout performer, having played a key part in Wasps' climb up the league table.

Former England star Austin Healey, who is now working as an analyst for BT Sport, believes that Simpson is more than worthy of the accolade.

"Joe is the best scrum-half in Aviva Premiership Rugby in terms of stats. Most metres, breaks, try assists, tackles, tries, and he added to that he has just scored one of if not the best try ever seen in the Premiership," he said.

"At some point in almost every player's career the saying 'what more can I do?' is said. That could not be more apt for this month's Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month.

"Joe is a worthy winner and constantly improving playing behind an ever improving Wasps pack. Surely a [Rugby World Cup] squad place beckons - if Stuart Lancaster sees his stats and it will be hard for him not to pick him."

Simpson, who is in the Wasps side to take on Leicester Tigers in a sell-out clash at the Ricoh Arena this weekend, beat off competition from Dave Ewers, George Ford, Matt Kvesic and Billy Vunipola to win the final monthly award of the season.
