The Rugby Football Union have reportedly been in direct contact with former Italy coach Nick Mallett over the permanent head coaching role at England.

The 55-year-old has been a favourite for the position after reports emerged claiming that the ex-Springboks coach applied for the job last month.

While it was initially believed that Mallett had simply spoken to the RFU, it is now understood that the former South Africa number eight met the governing body in a secret meeting, according to the Daily Mail.

It is thought that Mallett has informed the RFU that he will be available to take England to South Africa for their tour in June.

Interim boss Stuart Lancaster is also being considered for the position.
