Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that an announcement regarding the status of the club's new manager will be made on Friday.

The Championship outfit have been searching for a new leader following Roberto Martinez's decision to take on the managerial job at Everton.

"I still have two more lads to see but I expect to announce something tomorrow," Whelan told BBC Sport.

"I've seen some great lads, top managers and it could be we have to speak to one or two of them again, but I'd say it's likely we will make an announcement tomorrow."

Former England boss Steve McClaren and ex-Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle are thought to be the leading candidates for the position.
