Match Analysis: West Ham United 0-1 Stoke City

Sports Mole takes a closer look at Stoke City's 1-0 win over West Ham United in the Premier League.

West Ham United tasted defeat for the first time this season after Stoke City earned a late victory at Upton Park in the Premier League.

Jermaine Pennant came off the bench to curl home a brilliant free kick with just eight minutes to play that gave the Potters a 1-0 win.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the action between the two sides.

Stoke City:

Was the result fair?

It was. West Ham rarely troubled Stoke's backline and Stoke had the vast majority of the attacking play. Any other result would have been harsh on the Potters.

West Ham United's performance

The Hammers were crying out for Andy Carroll in that match, as they failed to make the most of any of their chances that they were given. They did have promising spells but it only ever looked as if Stoke were going to win it.

Stoke City's performance

Stoke were very good and, whisper this quietly, actually played some nice, tidy football. They controlled the match and had all the attacking possession. Justified result.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Jermaine Pennant: He may have only been on the pitch from the 76th minute, but Pennant's free kick was worthy of winning any match and was the sparkle in an otherwise dull encounter.

Biggest gaffe

This award should probably go to Modibo Maiga, who had the perfect chance to put West Ham in front just before half time. However, his header was woeful and proved costly.

Referee performance

Jon Moss was not the focus of the match, so that tells you all you need to know. He was correct with all his bookings. A good afternoon for the referee.

What next?

West Ham United: The Hammers are on the road next as they travel to Southampton on September 15.

Stoke City: The Potters play hosts to Manchester City the day before once the international break is over.
