Riots force Charlton to postpone Reading tie while an England friendly and a Palace game also threatened.

Riots in London have forced Charlton Athletic to postpone their home Carling Cup tie with Reading on Tuesday.

Crystal Palace's tie against Crawley Town at Selhurst Park has also been called off.

The postponements follow Monday’s announcement that West Ham’s Carling Cup clash against Aldershot will not go ahead.

A statement on Charlton’s website read: “Charlton’s Carling Cup first-round tie against Reading on Tuesday night has been postponed on the advice of police.

“At 10.55pm, the Greenwich Borough Police Commander Richard Wood contacted the club to advise that the match should be called off on safety grounds.”

As the impact of the third night of violence in the capital is assessed, questions are being raised about England’s friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley on Wednesday.

At this point, no official announcement has been made about England’s match at Wembley, but FA officials will discuss the matter at a routine meeting with police on Tuesday.
