Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher had the game's first real chance, as the Scot forced Boaz Myhill into a save with a close-range header.
The Baggies' first chance came on the 20-minute mark, as the former Sunderland midfielder Stephane Sessegnon came close with his left-footed shot but saw it go just wide of the upright.
Salomon Rondon and Saido Berahino have remained relatively quiet throughout the first 45 minutes, as it was Sessegnon who looked like West Brom's brightest player going forward.
