Preview: Swansea City vs. Rotherham United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Swansea City and Rotherham United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Swansea City play host to Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon knowing that they are a win away from guaranteeing survival in the Championship.

At a time when the home side sit in 15th position in the standings, Rotherham are already relegated and are merely playing for pride.

There have been times since his arrival in South Wales where Luke Williams has not necessarily convinced Swansea fans that he is the right man at the helm.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that he has had a greater impact at the club than his predecessor, collecting five wins and two draws from the last 12 matches to move Swansea away from the relegation zone.

Running out 3-0 victors against rivals Stoke City was his best result yet, with Swansea crucially reaching the 50-point mark with four matches remaining.

Although a seven-point cushion ensures that they are not mathematically safe, the Welsh outfit are realistically a point or two from making sure that they stay in the second tier.

Sitting just three points adrift of 13th place, that will now be the aim for a team that have only lost three of their most recent nine encounters.

Opponents Rotherham have long been relegated from this division, with their abysmal season meaning it did not take mathematics to know they would be playing League One football in 2024-25.

Beating Millwall at the New York Stadium provided a small bit of enjoyment, but they have since lost to Plymouth Argyle and West Bromwich Albion without conceding a goal.

An asterisk should be placed next to the West Brom loss, a consequence of the Baggies being awarded a penalty for a handball that took place at least a yard outside of the area.

In the grand scheme of things, it means very little, yet it could have a galvanising effect on Leam Richardson and his squad as they attempt to reduce the current 19-point margin to 23rd position.

Team News

Williams may see no reason to make any unenforced changes to his Swansea XI after his side excelled against Stoke.

Josh Tymon shook off a calf issue to complete that game and should remain at left-back, but Kyle Naughton, Joe Allen and Przemyslaw Placheta are all expected to stay on the sidelines.

As for Richardson, he could take the opportunity to freshen up his Rotherham XI with Shane Ferguson and Femi Seriki potentially returning in wide positions.

Tom Eaves may also get the nod down the centre of the attack, but there are seven players, including Daniel Ayala and Jordan Hugill, who remain injured.

Swansea City possible starting lineup:
Rushworth; Key, Cabango, Darling, Tymon; Fulton, Grimes; Ronald, Cooper, Paterson; Cullen

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Johansson; Revan, Odoffin, Peltier, Humphreys, Bramall; Seriki, Rinomhota, Clucas, Cafu; Eaves

We say: Swansea City 2-0 Rotherham United

A second away trip of the week is far from ideal for Rotherham and we feel it could take its toll. Meanwhile, Swansea head into this contest on a high and they could ultimately cruise to victory over the bottom-placed side.
