Atdhe Nuhiu's second-half header has seen Sheffield Wednesday knock second-round giantkillers Oxford United out of the Capital One Cup.
Early on, United keeper Sam Slocombe needed to be alert to keep out Tom Lees's header before Vincent Sasso fired wide soon after.
Oxford were restricted to few efforts at goal in the first half, with Alexander MacDonald looking to pull the trigger, but the forward saw his shot quickly closed down by the Owls defence.
Wednesday had chances to take the lead before half time, but Ross Wallace missed the target with a free kick from the edge of the area before Kieran Lee twice failed to beat Slocombe.
However, the Owls were ahead 10 minutes after the interval when the Oxford came to claim a cross and, when he failed to gather, Nuhiu was on hand to head home for the hosts.
Oxford tried to bring themselves back on terms, but Josh Ruffels was denied by Wednesday keeper Lewis Price before Joe Skarz headed over the bar.
MacDonald tried to force extra time with a last-minute free kick, but he was unable to direct his effort on target as Oxford saw their hopes of taking a second Championship scalp ended.
