Result: Real Sociedad 0-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid go back to the top of the La Liga table with a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad.

Real Madrid have returned to the top of the La Liga table with a 1-0 win at Real Sociedad.

Gonzalo Higuain gave Jose Mourinho's side the lead after eight minutes when he beat the offside trap before flicking past Claudio Munoz in the Sociedad goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo almost doubled the visitors' lead on 30 minutes, but his powerful shot was parried by Munoz.

After the break, substitute Antoine Griezmann came close to levelling the match, but his shot was turned around the post by Iker Casillas.

The away side continued to control the game and they should have sealed the win on 73 minutes but Sergio Ramos could not get on the end of Higuain's cross.

Despite their failure to score a second goal, Madrid held on to leapfrog rivals Barcelona at the top of the league.
