The visitors thought that they had broken the deadlock inside 10 minutes when Jamie Vardy finished a slick move by tapping in from close range, but the linesman's flag cut their celebrations short.
Reading's goal came just seven minutes later as Alex Pearce rose highest inside the area to produce a fine header past Kasper Schmeichel from a free kick.
The hosts almost doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark as Garath McCleary skipped past Jeffrey Schlupp on the right before picking out Jobi McAnuff, whose shot was well saved by Schmeichel.
Leicester came close two minutes later as Riyad Mahrez led a counter-attack before working space for himself to shoot, drilling an effort towards goal that Alex McCarthy did well to hold.
They were level just moments later, however, as Danny Drinkwater lashed a well-struck shot past the keeper from the edge of the box.
The visitors were almost ahead three minutes before the break when the Royals carelessly conceded a corner that Wes Morgan nodded over the crossbar from six yards.
Reading almost made a perfect end to the half when a long ball sent McCleary through on goal, but his chipped finish was pushed wide by Schmeichel as the scores remained level going into the interval.
