Rangers hit five past Airdrieonians

Three goals inside the opening 15 minutes help Rangers to a 5-0 victory over Airdrieonians in the Scottish League Cup.

Rangers have eased to a 5-0 victory over Airdrieonians in the second round of the Scottish League Cup.

The visitors opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute through Nicky Clark, who got on the end of a quick free kick from Andy Halliday to steer the ball into the net at the near post.

Airdrie needed to settle, but as the game approached the quarter-hour mark, Rangers effectively booked their place in the next round with two more goals in the space of 60 seconds.

Firstly, Halliday netted a strike from 25 yards to double their advantage, before Martyn Waghorn received a pass from on-loan midfielder Gedion Zelalem and struck the ball past a helpless Neil Parry.

Rangers continued to push forward for the remainder of the first half, but Waghorn, Gedion Zelalem, Dominic Ball and James Tavernier all squandered chances to extend the lead of the Glasgow giants.

A minute into the second half, Airdrie could have pulled a goal back through Bryan Prunty, but after being set up by Jamie Bain, he drilled his shot over the bar.

Sean Crighton also wasted a chance when blazing over from 12 yards out, before Rangers nearly added a fourth when Halliday rattled the woodwork with another effort from distance.

It appeared as though Rangers would settle for just the three goals, but six minutes from time, Dean Shiels netted from close range after seeing his initial shot saved by the goalkeeper.

A fifth was added to the scoreline in the 88th minute after Tavernier got into a forward position before firing a shot past Parry in the Airdrie goal to cap a fine night for the Scottish Championship leaders.
