FIFA to investigate alleged "smear campaign" against Michel Platini

The alleged "smear campaign" against UEFA president Michel Platini is to be investigated by FIFA after the European football governing body lodged a complaint.

FIFA has confirmed that an investigation will be launched into the alleged distribution of a dossier which criticised UEFA president Michel Platini.

UEFA lodged a complaint with football's world governing body on Sunday after German newspaper Welt am Sonntag published an anonymous document entitled 'Platini: Skeletons in the closet'.

It was claimed that the material from their headquarters was part of a wider "smear campaign" against Platini, who is running to replace Sepp Blatter as top boss of the scandal-hit organisation next year.

FIFA will now investigate the matter further after the 1,400-word document was sent anonymously to several newspapers.

Platini will contest next February's election with Chung Mong-joon, ex-Brazil star Zico and Liberian FA chairman Musa Bility.
