The Football Association's council has today opted against allowing chairman David Bernstein to stay in the role beyond his 70th birthday.
The council had been approached by the FA's board to allow Bernstein to complete his three-year term, which would have taken him beyond the 70-year age limit.
However, following a meeting, it has been decided that a successor will be found for 69-year-old Bernstein next year.
"I respect the decision and I remain committed to fulfilling my responsibilities and to building on what we have achieved over the past two years," said the current chairman.
"Next year is a significant one in the FA's history and I look forward to leading the organisation in the months ahead."
Bernstein took on the role in January 2011.
