The Magpies took the lead midway through the first half when Demba Ba smashed home an acrobatic volley after Gareth McAuley failed to clear a header from Shola Ameobi.
Romelu Lukaku spurned two gilt-edged chances to level the match late in the opening period thanks to pair of fine saves from Tim Krul.
Steve Clarke's side continued to press in the second half and scored a deserved equaliser after 52 minutes when Lukaku headed home a cross from Zoltan Gera.
Shane Long also threatened throughout the second half as the Baggies pushed for a winner.
Alan Pardew brought on Gabriel Obertan and Papiss Cisse in the closing stages but deep into stoppage time they looked to be heading towards a frustrating draw.
With just seconds left on the clock a shot from Sammy Ameobi deflected off Cisse past Ben Foster into the net to earn Newcastle a last-gasp victory.
