CJ Sapong denies New York City FC second win

New York City FC are denied their second ever win as CJ Sapong nets an 86th-minute equaliser to earn Philadelphia Union a point at Yankee Stadium.

CJ Sapong grabbed an 86th-minute equaliser as Philadelphia Union earned a 1-1 draw with New York City FC at Yankee Stadium this morning.

The hosts had looked on course for just their second ever MLS victory when Mehdi Ballouchy fired them ahead shortly before the hour mark.

However, Sapong struck in the final minutes of normal time to snatch a deserved point for Philly.

Jim Curtin's visitors flew out of the traps, with City goalkeeper Josh Saunders forced to keep out Andrew Wenger, Sebastien Le Toux and Eric Ayuk Mbu within the first four minutes.

The hosts grew into the encounter and went close on 15 minutes when Javier Calle fired narrowly past the top corner.

Calle turned provider shortly before the half-hour mark but Adam Nemec could not convert his corner, before Ballouchy blazed just over the bar minutes later.

Both sides cancelled each other out for the remainder of the half, until Ballouchy opened the scoring on 57 minutes when the Moroccan latched on to Shelton's ball to fire past John McCarthy into the top left-hand corner.

Unperturbed, Union carried on in the same vein and went close through Sheanon Williams and Le Toux, but Saunders denied them once more.

It was a sign of things to come, however, as Sapong found the top corner from the centre of the box to earn a hard-fought point for the visitors.
