Middlesbrough remain one place outside of the play-off places after a 0-0 draw with Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday.
It was the home side who created the first chance of the match after seven minutes courtesy of Julio Arca, but Gary Woods was on hand to make a smart save.
Stephen McManus was next to come close for Middlesbrough after 16 minutes, but his header just cleared the crossbar.
Barry Robson struck wide for the home side moments later, before Doncaster's John Oster headed just wide after good work from James O'Connor.
Middlesbrough certainly ended the second period the better, however, with Lukas Jutkiewicz twice testing Woods late in the half.
Robson might have sent the home side into the lead moments after the interval, before Scott McDonald missed the target from close range.
Seb Hines came close to opening the scoring for Middlesbrough just before the 60-minute mark, but he headed an Arca cross wide from close range.
Chances remained few and far between in the latter stages of the match, with an Adam Hammill effort for the home side after 81 minutes the pick of the action.
