Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane thinks that the Red Devils are more than capable of challenging Liverpool for the Premier League title.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane believes that the Red Devils can challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men made light work of Leeds United with a 6-2 thrashing at Old Trafford on Sunday evening - a result which sees them sit five points adrift of leaders Liverpool in third.

United have not been crowned English champions since the 2012-13 campaign, which was Sir Alex Ferguson's last season in charge, but Keane thinks that the current Red Devils crop can give holders Liverpool a good run for their money.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Keane said: "I think over the last few months they've been heavily criticised, particularly over the home record.

"I've been quite critical of the back four, the goalkeeper, questioning where this team is going, but the name of this game is proving people wrong. Maybe, just maybe, this group of players can do that.

"They've been winning games, and that's all you can do. United are in a great position considering how slow they were out of the blocks. If United can get their house in order at home, there's no reason why United can't stay up there.

"I think Liverpool are still the best, but there's no reason why United should be fancying their chances in terms of pushing Liverpool."

United next face a midweek EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Everton at Goodison Park before Boxing Day's highly-anticipated showdown with second-placed Leicester City.
