Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is not named in their squad to take on Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney has not been included in the Manchester United squad to face Newcastle United this afternoon.

Early reports have suggested that the striker has been rested by Sir Alex Ferguson, while winger Ashley Young has also not been named in the 18-man party.

Those omissions have resulted in starting chances for Javier Hernandez, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Meanwhile, Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba will continue in attack for visiting Newcastle, who are without Cheick Tiote because of suspension.

Man United: De Gea; Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs; Van Persie, Hernandez

Newcastle: Krul; Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon; Anita, Perch, Bigirimana. Marveaux; Cisse, Ba
