Manchester United ended their 2016-17 Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho named Man United's youngest ever starting XI in Premier League history, and the 20-time English champions comfortably overcame a Palace team that secured their survival last weekend.

Joel Pereira, Demetri Mitchell and Josh Harrop all made their Premier League debuts for Man United, while there was a full debut for tall midfielder Scott McTominay, who appeared against Arsenal earlier this month.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe were also named in the side, but there were positions for Phil Jones, Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Wayne Rooney, with the latter captaining the team on possibly his final appearance.

As for Palace, an experienced side included the likes of Christian Benteke, Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha, while Patrick van Aanholt was given an attacking role for the Eagles at Old Trafford.

It was the visitors that had the game's first half-chance inside two minutes, but Van Aanholt, after breaking into the Man United box, was denied by a fine last-ditch challenge from Fosu-Mensah.

Harrop was bright down the home side's left in the opening 10 minutes, with the midfielder's link-up play with fellow debutant Mitchell a key feature of Man United's work against the Eagles in the early exchanges.

Rooney came close to making the breakthrough in the 13th minute after being found by a super pass from Mitchell, but the Red Devils captain could only lift his effort over the crossbar after taking control in a wide position.

Man United opened the scoring in the 15th minute, however, when Pogba found the impressive Harrop with a searching pass, and the midfielder worked a yard of space inside the Palace box before finishing into the far corner.

Four minutes later, the home side were 2-0 ahead when Pogba, who had been found after excellent work from Jesse Lingard in a central position, finished into the back of the net after arriving at the decisive moment, which brought the Old Trafford crowd to life once again.

Palace might have halved the deficit in the 26th minute when Benteke rose highest inside the Man United box, but the Belgian just failed to make contact as the home side's two-goal advantage remained intact.

Harrop came close to doubling his tally for the afternoon just past the 30-minute mark after curling another effort towards the top corner, but the debutant's effort just missed Wayne Hennessey's post.

Tuanzebe, once again operating in a midfield position, also had a half-chance for Man United late in the first period, but the teenager headed wide of the Palace goal as the home side took a two-goal advantage into the half-time interval at Old Trafford.

There were two changes in the final stages of the first period, however, with Anthony Martial and Michael Carrick replacing Pogba and Lingard, suggesting that the latter two would start the Europa League final next week.

Palace boss Sam Allardyce did not look to his bench at the interval, although former Man United striker Frazier Campbell was among those available for the former England manager on the afternoon.

Benteke almost halved the deficit in the 55th minute when he rose highest inside the home side's box to meet a cross from Zaha, but the Belgian international's effort hit the post as Pereira scrambled across his goal.

Palace, who have ended the season in 14th position, continued to enjoy decent possession as the second period developed, although clear opportunities were few and far between, with two goals still separating the pair entering the final 25 minutes of Premier League action.

Rooney almost sent one flying past his own goalkeeper in the 73rd minute after meeting a free kick from Bakary Sako, but the ball just missed the crossbar as Man United survived another dangerous moment in the second period. Pereira then made a smart save to keep out a free kick from Luka Milivojevic as the visitors continued to press.

The standout moment of the second period came in the 88th minute, however, when 16-year-old Angel Gomes, who lifted the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year trophy on Thursday, became Man United's youngest ever player in the Premier League era.

Gomes took the place of Rooney, and the manner in which the skipper left the field suggested that it might well be his final appearance in a Man United shirt at Old Trafford.

In the end, a second period that produced few chances finished level, but first-half efforts from Harrop and Pogba were enough for Man United to collect all the points at Old Trafford.

Man United finish the 2016-17 Premier League campaign in sixth position in the table, but they will have the chance to secure qualification for next season's Champions League when they face Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
