Edwin van der Sar, currently employed as Ajax's technical director, is reportedly wanted by Manchester United to lead their squad overhaul this summer.

Manchester United have reportedly earmarked club legend Edwin van der Sar to lead their squad overhaul.

The Red Devils hoped to have someone in place in their newly-created director of football role in time for the summer transfer window.

A number of names have been linked, including RB Leipzig's Paul Mitchell, Inter Milan's Giuseppe Marotta and Van de Sar, who is currently employed by Ajax.

According to The Telegraph, it is the former goalkeeper who United may turn to in their search of a transfer guru to help shape their squad for the long term.

Van der Sar admitted earlier this month that he would be open to a return to Old Trafford, where he won four Premier Leagues and the Champions League in his playing days, but not until his journey with Champions League semi-finalists Ajax has concluded.

Meanwhile, the report indicates that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's right-hand man Mike Phelan is holding off from signing a new contract until a director of football is appointed.
