Spurs lead Manchester United 2-0 at half time courtesy of goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale.

Tottenham Hotspur are on course to register their first win at Old Trafford in the Premier League era as they lead Manchester United 2-0 at half time.

Spurs made a perfect start to the half, taking the lead after just two minutes when Jan Vertonghen exchanged passes with Gareth Bale before beating Andy Lindegaard with a deflected effort.

They almost doubled this lead six minutes later when former Fulham duo Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey combined, but the latter's shot went just wide.

Vertonghen came close to getting a second of the game in the 21st minute when he met Bale's cross, but his header went just over.

Spurs made it 2-0 just after the half-hour mark, Bale turning goalscorer this time to give his side some breathing space.

United had a penalty appeal towards the end of the half but the referee turned it down as Spurs took a surprise lead into the break.
