Fabio Capello has given the biggest indication yet that he is planning to select Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand for next year's European Championships.
Rooney's participation has been in doubt after he was handed a three-match ban by UEFA for kicking Montenegro defender Miodrag Dzudovic, a verdict which has ruled him out of the group stages.
Centre-back Ferdinand's international future had come into question after he failed to make Capello's squad for the recent match in Podgorica.
However, the Italian boss has claimed that England will "need" both players during the tournament.
"During the games we need some leaders," said Capello. "Jack Wilshere is incredible because he is so young.
"But we also need the experience of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Scott Parker.
"You need this kind of player, plus Wayne Rooney I hope."
Capello also revealed that young strikers Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge have impressed him so far this season.
