Uruguay officials "optimistic" over Luis Suarez injury

Uruguayan official Roberto Pastoriza remains confident that striker Luis Suarez will overcome injury in time to feature in the World Cup.

Uruguay officials remain "optimistic" that Luis Suarez will overcome injury in time to play a part in this summer's World Cup.

News filtered through earlier today that the 27-year-old striker would need to undergo surgery in order to repair damage to his knee, which was sustained during training on Wednesday night.

However, despite the setback South American newspaper Ovacion quotes Roberto Pastoriza, the Uruguay national team secretary, as saying: "According to the report I received a while ago, we are optimistic that Luis Suarez can arrive at the World Cup.

"Suarez decided to have an MRI [scan] after feeling a twinge in his knee – there will be an official announcement on Thursday morning. We will then know a lot more about recovery time."

The publication suggests that the surgery required by Suarez takes at least 15 days' recovery, while Los Charruas begin their World Cup in 23 days' time.
