Roy Hodgson hopes for "less effective" Luis Suarez

England boss Roy Hodgson hopes that Luis Suarez proves himself to be less of a menace for Uruguay than he is for Liverpool.

England manager Roy Hodgson is hopeful that Uruguay striker Luis Suarez proves himself to be less of a menace on the international stage.

The Liverpool hitman, who bagged 31 goals for the Reds last season, is poised to face the Three Lions in the group stages of next month's World Cup in Brazil.

Hodgson insists that he will not implement efforts to combat any individual player, but remains optimistic that the 27-year-old - who claimed three end-of-season awards - will prove less effective without the supporting cast he has at club level.

"Suarez is my player of the year," he told reporters. "I'm not trying to take anything away from him, he's had a wonderful season. He's an exceptional player, with exceptional ability.

"But he's not alone. He won't have at Uruguay the same players he has around him at Liverpool. So who knows? Maybe he's less effective with Uruguay than for Liverpool.

"I think it would be a big mistake to get hung up on any individual player no matter how much you respect their ability."

England face Oscar Tabarez's Uruguay on June 19.
