Steve Clarke insists that West Bromwich Albion striker Shane Long will remain at The Hawthorns following reports that Liverpool are interested in the forward.

West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke has insisted that there is no foundation to reports that Liverpool are interested in striker Shane Long.

It has been claimed that the Republic of Ireland forward is a target for the Merseyside club, who are in need of a striker in the January window.

"It's just lazy journalism," the Birmingham Mail quotes Clarke as saying. "Liverpool need a striker, Shane is playing well so a lazy journalist puts it together and makes a story out of it.

"Shane is not for sale. And I'd be very surprised if Brendan Rodgers wanted to take Shane anyway. People are merely looking at connections and making stories out of it."

Long moved to The Hawthorns from Reading last year.
