Ian Rush believes that "fantastic" Daniel Sturridge still has a big part to play at Liverpool, despite being handed just four Premier League starts this season.

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has warned his former club that they risk losing their most natural finisher if they allow Daniel Sturridge to leave the club in the New Year.

The England international has been left frustrated by a lack of playing time this term, instead playing second fiddle to the likes of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho.

Sturridge has yet to register a single goal in his nine league outings, just four of which have been starts, leading to suggestions that he will make way when the transfer window reopens for business.

Rush believes that the 27-year-old still has a big part to play at Anfield, however, as evidenced by his 43 goals in 78 top-flight games since joining the Reds from Chelsea in 2013.

"For me I think it would be wrong if Liverpool got rid of him because for me he's a great finisher," he told Omnisport. "Daniel Sturridge is a team player. When you get there it's about taking that chance and I'm sure his chance will come.

"For me he's a major part for Liverpool football club. He's probably the most gifted finisher we have. He's a fantastic player, fantastic finisher and I'm sure when he's fit he'll make himself available."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp recently categorically ruled out putting Sturridge, who is currently nursing a calf injury, up for sale next month.
