Liverpool team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Ajax

Sports Mole rounds up Liverpool's injury and suspension news ahead of Wednesday's Champions League fixture against Ajax.

Liverpool begin their 2020-21 Champions League campaign on Wednesday evening with a clash against Ajax.

The Premier League champions are returning to action on the continent for the first time since March after their last-16 exit to Atletico Madrid.

While the Merseyside giants are again competing at the top end of the Premier League table, Jurgen Klopp is having to contend with a mounting injury list at Anfield.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the trip to the Netherlands.

Kostas Tsimikas

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Thigh
Possible return date: October 21 (vs. Ajax)

Tsimikas picked up a thigh problem during the EFL Cup win over Lincoln City last month and has not been involved since. While the Greece international is not thought to be too far away from a return, the left-back may not be risked on Wednesday night.

Virgil van Dijk

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Van Dijk sustained a serious knee injury on Saturday afternoon, a consequence of a reckless challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Liverpool confirmed on Sunday evening that the centre-back will undergo surgery, making it unlikely that the Netherlands international will feature again this season.

Thiago Alcantara

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: October 21 (vs. Ajax)

Like Van Dijk, midfielder Thiago was on the receiving end of a knee-high challenge in the Merseyside derby. Although the Spaniard was able to walk off the pitch at the full-time whistle, Klopp has suggested that the summer arrival could spend a period on the sidelines.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Oxlade-Chamberlain continues to battle back from the knee injury that he picked up during pre-season. The England international has made steps forward in his recovery, but the visit to Ajax is likely to come too soon.

Naby Keita

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Coronavirus
Possible return date: October 17 (vs. Everton)

Keita was believed to have tested positive for coronavirus while away on international duty with Guinea, but it is understood that the midfielder returned a false result. Providing that all protocols are completed, he may come into contention on Wednesday.

Alisson Becker

Status: Out
Type of injury: Shoulder
Possible return date: Unknown

Liverpool will be without their number one goalkeeper Alisson for the next four to six weeks due to a shoulder problem that he picked up in training. The Brazilian is not expected to return until after the November international break.

Joel Matip

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knock
Possible return date: October 24 (vs. Sheffield United)

Having picked up a knock during the closing stages of the Merseyside derby, Matip is another centre-back who will miss this game. As it stands, it is unclear whether the Cameroonian will return at the weekend.

LIVERPOOL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Liverpool have no players suspended for this game.
