Preview: Leyton Orient vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Leyton Orient and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Both aiming to build on weekend successes, Leyton Orient and Peterborough United will meet for a tasty-looking League One clash at the Gaughan Group Stadium on Tuesday night.

The O's produced arguably the standout performance of the weekend leading to a handsome away victory, whilst Posh managed to get the better of Bristol Rovers on home soil.

After enduring a four-game winless run at the beginning of the 2024-25 League One schedule, Leyton Orient have hit their stride since the September international break, with Tuesday's hosts recording back-to-back wins to claw themselves out of the relegation zone.

Even more impressively, both of the O's recent victories have arrived away from the Gaughan Group Stadium, with Richie Wellens's troops securing maximum points from contests at Reading and early pacesetters Stockport County on Saturday, when the Hatters suffered their maiden loss of the campaign.

Bagging a brilliant brace within the opening 20 minutes at Edgeley Park, Ethan Galbraith tripled his goal tally for the League One campaign so far to three, with the 23-year-old Northern Ireland international well on his way to bettering his five-strike return from last season.

Following the collection of six points from two third-tier away trips, Leyton Orient have moved up to 20th in the early League One standings, ahead of 21st-placed Rotherham United - who were widely considered as heavy favourites for promotion - due to a superior goal difference.

The O's are still awaiting their first success at the Gaughan Group Stadium in League One this term, although Wellens's side were dealt a difficult hand at their London base, facing Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City in their opening two games at the venue.

Missing out on promotion to the Championship due to playoff semi-final heartbreak in each of the last two seasons, Peterborough United are on a mission to challenge the likes of Birmingham, Huddersfield and Wrexham in the fight for a top-two spot and automatic promotion.

That being said, Posh endured a troubling start to their 2024-25 itinerary - losing 2-0 at home to Michael Duff's Terriers - although since then Tuesday's visitors have enjoyed three wins in their last five third-tier battles, including success in a five-goal thriller versus Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

It appeared as if Peterborough were set to cruise to victory as goals from Kwame Poku, Ricky-Jade Jones and Malik Mothersille fired Darren Ferguson's team three ahead after 63 minutes, however a late pair of strikes from the Pirates ensured a nervy end to the match at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Three points against Bristol Rovers on the weekend moved Posh up to 10th in the league table, just the single point behind sixth-placed Lincoln City, with Peterborough having the chance to potentially rise as high as third place with a win at Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

Ferguson's squad still possesses a dangerous array of talent at League One level despite a host of significant first-team departures during the summer transfer window, including winger Ephron Mason-Clark and full-back Harrison Burrows, with the pair switching to Coventry City and Sheffield United respectively.

Team News

Following their thumping of Stockport on the weekend, Leyton Orient could name an unchanged starting XI, with Daniel Happe and Omar Beckles operating as a centre-back duo.

Daniel Agyei managed two contributions at Edgeley Park and should continue on the left flank, although the place of youngster Oliver O'Neill on the right-hand side is less secure.

Right-back Dominic Ball will be pushing for a start after providing an assist off the bench last time out, whilst Jordan Graham could also be promoted to the side as a great deliverer of the ball.

Forced off after 20 minutes on the weekend, Christopher Conn-Clarke is unlikely to feature for Peterborough on Tuesday night, meaning that Jones will require a new partner in attack.

Finding the net off the bench, 20-year-old Mothersille is set to assume that role, whilst Abraham Odoh and Joel Randall are also targeting spots in the XI.

Leyton Orient possible starting lineup:
Hemming; James, Beckles, Happe, Currie; Brown, Clare; O'Neill, Galbraith, Agyei; Kelman

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Steer; Ajiboye, Katongo, Fernandez, Wallin, Sparkes; Kyprianou, Poku, Collins; Jones, Mothersille

We say: Leyton Orient 1-2 Peterborough United

After successive away victories, Leyton Orient should be confident of recording their maiden home win of the season against Peterborough on Tuesday night.

However, with the attacking talent at the disposal of Ferguson, we feel that Posh will manage to escape the capital with three points from this clash.
