The visitors started well and went ahead just 90 seconds after kickoff when Leigh Griffiths collected Kris Commons's pass and fired home.
Griffiths and James Forrest both went close as Celtic's bright start continued, but Kilmarnock remained a threat on the break.
Josh Magennis fired wastefully over the bar after being sent through on goal, and Craig Gordon was forced into a save with his feet from Lee Ashcroft's powerful header.
The hosts got their reward on the stroke of half time when Magennis prodded home Darryl Westlake's cross from close range.
Ronny Deila's side started the second half as brightly as they had the first, however, and retook the lead in spectacular fashion through Nir Bitton just before the hour mark.
The Israeli midfielder collected the ball 30 yards from goal and unleashed a ferocious strike that flew past Jamie MacDonald and into the top corner.
Rory McKenzie forced Gordon into a smart save as the hosts fought back, but Celtic could have increased their lead had Griffiths's acrobatic effort dipped under the bar.
Killie then made Celtic pay for their wastefulness when Kallum Higginbotham dinked home a late penalty to rescue a draw.
