Tyias Browning: 'It was good to face Jefferson Montero'

Everton defender Tyias Browning insists that he was pleased to face Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero, and hopes to have impressed manager Roberto Martinez.

Everton defender Tyias Browning has insisted that he was happy to face Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero on Saturday.

The 21-year-old defender - who is a product of the club's academy - made just his fifth appearance for the Toffees at the weekend in place of the injured Seamus Coleman, and Browning hopes that he did well enough against the Ecuadorian winger to persuade manager Roberto Martinez to keep him in the starting XI.

"I had an idea that I would be playing on Saturday, with Seamus being out, but I only found out on the day and I knew it would be a good challenge for me," Browning told the Liverpool Echo.

"It took me a couple of minutes to get going against [Montero] because he was at me from the start but once I got into the game I was alright. The lads were just telling me to keep going and stay on him because Montero was doing what I wanted him to do.

"I knew it would be a tough test but I'd rather face a tough challenge than nobody and the game has given me something to work on. Hopefully I've done enough to get a game next week."

Browning has made nine international appearances for England at youth level.
