Half-Time Report: Kevin Mirallas fires Everton ahead

Kevin Mirallas gives Everton a 1-0 lead over 10-man Burnley at Goodison Park in the Premier League.

Kevin Mirallas has given Everton a 1-0 lead over Burnley at half time at Goodison Park in their Premier League match this afternoon.

The home side could have opened the scoring 10 minutes in when they were awarded a penalty after Aaron Lennon was brought down in the box, but Ross Barkley's spot kick lacked power, leaving Tom Heaton to make the save.

The Burnley keeper was tested again a few minutes later when Seamus Coleman crossed the ball in towards Leighton Baines, but Heaton palmed the powerful shot away.

Kieran Trippier tried to create some pressure down the other end by whipping a free kick into the box, but Phil Jagielka hooked it clear before the visitors could get a shot away.

Everton soon started to control the match again, and broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark when Arouna Kone flicked the ball on for Mirallas to roll into the back of the net.

Sean Dyche's men could have been back on level terms shortly after when David Jones found himself in space on the edge of the area, but his curling finish went just high of the crossbar.

Burnley's chances of a second-half comeback were dealt a blow in the final seconds of the half as Ashley Barnes picked up his second booking of the day, earning him a red card.
