A second-half penalty from Niall McGinn sends Dundee into the second tier of Scottish football.

Dundee were relegated from the Scottish Premier League this afternoon after a Niall McGinn penalty rescued a point for Aberdeen at Dens Park.

The league's basement club took the lead in the 20th minute courtesy of screamer from James McAlister, who fired into the top corner from outside the area.

Aberdeen had a pair of chances to draw level with just over half an hour played as Ryan Jack and Rory Fallon forced a double save out of Dundee keeper Steve Simonsen.

Things really went downhill for the visitors in the second period when Fallon was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Declan Gallagher.

Despite their opponents' numerical advantage, Aberdeen did snatch an equaliser from the penalty spot after Brian Easton brought down Peter Pawlett in the area.

McGinn buried the spot kick to secure a point for the Dons and send Dundee into the second tier of Scottish football.
