Preview: Dallas vs. Austin FC - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Major League Soccer clash between Dallas and Austin FC, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

After having time to recuperate from the Leagues Cup, Dallas will return to MLS action on Saturday when they welcome Austin FC to Toyota Stadium.

The visitors, meanwhile, will be looking for a response after they fell to a third straight defeat in all competitions last weekend.

Match preview

Dallas have had plenty of time to prepare for Saturday's contest after their run in the Leagues Cup was brought to an end by eventual winners Inter Miami on August 7.

After giving up a 4-2 lead to draw 4-4 against Messi and co, Dallas went on to lose the subsequent penalty shootout, ensuring that they exited the competition at the last-16 stage.

With their batteries recharged, Dallas are now preparing to play their first MLS game since July 16, and they will be hoping that the break will help them experience an upturn in fortunes.

Dallas have mustered just two wins in their previous 11 MLS matches (D3, L6), leaving them in 10th place with 11 games left to play in the regular season.

Impressively, the hosts have never lost a home game against Austin, with their previous three meetings at Toyota Stadium producing two wins and one draw.

In contrast to Saturday's opponents, Austin failed to make it out of their Leagues Cup group after losing 3-1 to both Mazatlan and Juarez.

Another poor result followed last weekend when The Verde and Black returned to MLS action with a disappointing 6-3 away defeat to St Louis City.

The scoreline set a record for the most goals conceded by Austin in a single match, and they have now shipped 38 goals in 24 MLS matches this term - no side in the Western Conference has let in more.

Despite experiencing a tough run of form, Austin are currently sitting in seventh place and are two points better off than Dallas, who occupy 10th position.

Although The Verde and Black have never won an away game against Dallas, they will draw confidence from their most recent meeting in June when they cruised to a 3-0 victory at Q2 Stadium.

Team News

Dallas will go into the contest without the services of Tarik Scott, who is still recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Former Real Madrid and Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi could be handed his Dallas debut, while his fellow summer signing Liam Fraser is likely to appear among the substitutes.

Jesus Ferreira, who has scored 10 goals in 18 MLS appearances this term, is expected to be joined in the forward line by Bernard Kamungo and Jade Obrian.

As for the visitors, head coach Josh Wolff is still unable to call upon Leo Vaisanen and Zan Kolmanic due to knee injuries.

There are doubts over the availability of Maximiliano Urruti, who is a doubt after being forced off against St Louis City.

After dropping down to the bench last weekend, Nick Lima is expected to return to the Austin backline for Saturday's contest.

Dallas possible starting lineup:
Paes; Jesus, Ibeagha, Tafari, Farfan; Lletget, Illaramendi, Quignon; Obrian, Velasco, Ferreira

Austin FC possible starting lineup:
Stuver; Lima, Cascante, Hedges, Gallagher; Wolff, Pereira; Finlay, Driussi, Rodriguez; Zardes

We say: Dallas 2-1 Austin FC

Dallas have never lost a home game against Austin, and with their opponents low on confidence following three consecutive defeats, we think that they will maintain that unbeaten record by claiming a narrow victory on Saturday.
