Frank Lampard stresses the importance of Chelsea winning their "bread and butter" games against lower-placed opposition.

Frank Lampard has stressed the importance of Chelsea winning their "bread and butter" games against lower-placed opposition, saying that big wins against the title contenders are not enough.

Lampard came on as a substitute and scored a winning penalty in Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Monday, opening up the top of the Premier League table in the process.

"A lot is made of beating and getting results against the big teams and they are obviously our challengers and we need to do that at times," the England star said.

"But we also need to win our bread and butter games. We have left ourselves in a position where we have to win pretty much all of them to get ourselves back in the race.

"We can't get too excited, because there is still a seven-point gap at the top. We have got to keep our heads down. But seven points is far better than 13."

Chelsea currently sit in third place, with 31 points from 15 games.
