Preview: Carpi vs. Inter Milan

Sports Mole previews this weekend's Serie A match between Carpi and Inter Milan at the Stadio Alberto Braglia.

Carpi will be playing their first ever home match in Serie A this weekend when they take on Inter Milan at the Stadio Alberto Braglia.

The Biancorossi endured a disastrous start to life in the top flight against Sampdoria last week, while their opponents needed a last-gasp winner from Stevan Jovetic to sneak past Atalanta.

Carpi

The past few seasons have been a whirlwind for Modena-based Carpi, as just four years ago they were in the third tier of Italian football.

The 2012–13 season was their first in Serie B, and last term they finished top of the division to book a historic place in Serie A among the country's elite clubs.

Fabrizio Castori's side conceded just 28 goals in their 42 league matches as they ended nine points clear of nearest challengers Frosinone.

There was a huge wave of excitement as they began life in the top flight against Sampdoria last weekend, but their Serie A debut quickly turned into a nightmare, as the Blucerchiati hammered five goals past them inside the opening half.

Andrea Lazzari and Ryder Matos pulled two goals back to give their supporters at least something to cheer, as they eventually succumbed to a 5-2 defeat.

It will have come as a reality check to Castori and his players, as they were far too open at the back and gave quality opposition the time and space needed to take full advantage.

A repeat against Inter this weekend will surely end in more heartbreak, but their forwards have shown that they are capable of giving the visitors a number of problems at the back.

Inter Milan

Following a disappointing season in which they failed to qualify for Europe or win any silverware, Inter have made a number of changes to their playing squad in a bid to close the gap on their rivals.

They have splashed big money on Geoffrey Kondogbia, while Martin Montoya, Jeison Murillo, Miranda and Jovetic have also arrived in Milan this summer.

Many of their new signings were handed debuts in last weekend's home clash against Atalanta, but it appeared as though their problems from last season would remain, as they struggled to create chances and headed into stoppage time on level terms.

With the game set to end in a goalless draw, they finally found the back of the net three minutes into added time, as Jovetic curled a strike into the far corner to secure a 1-0 win on his debut.

Roberto Mancini will be hoping that his team can provide more threat in the final third against Carpi, but they will be without last season's top goalscorer Mauro Icardi, who lasted just 15 minutes of their opening match before limping off.

Team News

Carpi are not expected to make wholesale changes from their heavy defeat at Sampdoria, but Kamil Wilczek should come into the attack in place of Kevin Lasagna.

Despite conceding five goals in that match, on-loan goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic will retain his place between the sticks.

Inter have been dealt a blow with the news that Icardi is still suffering with a thigh strain, so last weekend's match winner Jovetic will start up front alongside Rodrigo Palacio.

The Nerazzurri are also without Marcelo Brozovic, who has a twisted ankle, meaning that Hernanes should play in behind the two strikers.

Carpi possible starting lineup:
Brkic, Letizia, Gagliolo, Spolli, Bubnjic, Silva, Marrone, Lazzari, Wallace, Matos, Wilczek

Inter Milan possible starting lineup:
Handanovic, Santon, Murillo, Miranda, Jesus, Medel, Kondogbia, Guarin, Hernanes, Palacio, Jovetic

Head To Head

This will be the first league meeting between the two teams, but they did play each other in a pre-season friendly in Riscone.

On that occasion it was Inter who came out on top, as Palacio, Icardi, Hernanes and Leonardo Longo scored in a 4-2 win.

We say: Carpi 0-2 Inter Milan

Carpi were given a tough lesson in their first Serie A match last weekend and they won't want to suffer the same cruel fate in front of their home supporters. They will be facing an Inter side who struggled away from San Siro last season, but we think that Mancini's men will have enough quality to keep up their winning start to the new campaign.
