Burnley have played out a goalless draw against former Ligue 1 champions Montpellier HSC in Sunday's pre-season friendly at Turf Moor.

Following a slow start to proceedings in Lancashire, the hosts won a free kick on six minutes after Aiden O'Neill was brought down, but the delivery evaded everybody en route to Benjamin Lecomte.

At the other end, Paul Lasne saw an ninth-minute effort saved by Adam Legzdins, but Burnley soon bore down on goal again and only Daniel Congre's last-ditch tackle prevented Jonathan Walters from a clear shot on target.

Both sides continued to trade blows throughout the first half but could not force the issue, but the Clarets were given cause for concern when Robbie Brady had to be taken off on 42 minutes.

Jeff Hendrick came close to opening the scoring shortly after the restart, but his driving effort from inside the box was cleared off the line by Pedro Mendes.

A spate of substitutions throughout the second half hampered the momentum of the game, though the 2011-12 French champions mustered several half-chances during the latter stages of the encounter.

Dwight McNeil also came within a whisker of scoring late on, his effort fizzing just wide of the post as the sides could not be separated come full time.

BURNLEY: Legzdins; Bardsley, Dunne, Long, Taylor, Brady (McNeil 42'), Hendrick (Mason 60'), O'Neill, Walters, Vokes (Agyei 73'), Barnes (Wells 60')

MONTPELLIER HSC: Lecomte, Aguilar (Porsan-Clemente 82'), Mendes, Hilton, Congre, Skhiri (Le Tallec 46'), Lasne (Piriz 82'), Mbenza (Sambia 82'), Mollet (Skuletic 73'), Oyongo (Poaty 73'), Delort (Sio 65')
