Sam Vokes: 'Burnley made to pay the price in derby defeat'

Sam Vokes admits to being 'disappointed and frustrated' by Burnley's defeat to rivals Preston North End, which he puts down to a failure to push on from a bright start.

Sam Vokes has conceded that Burnley were punished by Preston North End for failing to build on their positive start to the contest.

The Clarets were stunned by their Lancashire rivals on Saturday afternoon, as they succumbed to a 2-0 reverse at Turf Moor.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche had never previously tasted a derby defeat during his three years in charge, and he has put the loss down to a failure to convert chances.

These are comments which Vokes goes along with, while also backing his manager's claims that the opening quarter of the match provided Burnley's best showing of the campaign to date.

"It was very disappointing and a frustrating afternoon," he is quoted as saying by the Lancashire Telegraph. "I think we started really strong - probably the best first 20 minutes we've played this season.

"If we'd have scored in those first 20 minutes I think it would have been a different game and a different outcome, but we didn't and paid the price in the end."

It is the second week in succession that Burnley have trailed by two goals in a match, having battled back to rescue a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City the week prior.
