Live Commentary: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona - as it happened

Relive Barcelona's 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid as Lionel Messi's 87th-minute winner fires his side top of La Liga on their final league visit to the Vicente Calderon.

Barcelona moved two points clear at the top of the table courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in their final La Liga visit to the Vicente Calderon this afternoon.

It took until the 64th minute for the deadlock to be broken when Rafinha swept a loose ball past Jan Oblak from inside the box, but that lead lasted just six minutes before Diego Godin glanced home an equaliser for the hosts.

However, Lionel Messi proved to be Barca's saviour for the second consecutive week as he poked home the winning goal just three minutes from time to take his side above Real Madrid and Sevilla at the top of La Liga.

Find out how all of the action unfolded courtesy of Sports Mole's minute-by-minute coverage below.

Good afternoon! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for today's huge La Liga clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona! It is the last ever league game between these two at the Vicente Calderon - and most likely the last ever one here full stop - so Atletico will be keen to mark the occasion in style. Barca have a very good record here down the years, though, and know that victory would temporarily lift them top of the table. Before we take a deeper look at it all, though, let's check out the team news...

ATLETICO STARTING XI: Oblak; Vrsaljko, Savic, Godin, Luis; Carrasco, Saul, Gabi, Koke; Gameiro, Griezmann

ATLETICO SUBS: Moya, Torres, Correa, Hernandez, Partey, Gaitan, Gimenez

BARCELONA STARTING XI: Ter Stegen; Roberto, Pique, Umtiti, Mathieu; Rafinha, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suarez, Neymar

BARCELONA SUBS: Rakitic, D Suarez, Cillessen, Alcacer, Alba, Digne, Gomes

What can we make of those two teams, then? Well, the main news as far as the home side are concerned is that French duo Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann continue their partnership up front having both netted in the 4-2 win over Leverkusen on Tuesday. The pair are joint top-scorers for Atletico in La Liga so far this season with nine apiece, but it is Gameiro who is in the better form heading into this match. He has five goals in his last four games, including a hat-trick in Atletico's last La Liga outing.

Gameiro has been something of a creative force for Atletico this season as well, registering five assists, all of which have been for his strike partner Griezmann. Griezmann's quality is beyond doubt having established himself as one of the best players in world football over the past couple of seasons, finishing behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in last year's Ballon d'Or vote. The France international has 17 goals for the season across all competitions and has netted three times in his last two games against Barcelona here.

Diego Simeone makes just two changes to the team that put one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League yet again in midweek, with both of those coming in defensive positions. Jan Oblak returns in goal having established himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in European football since Thibaut Courtois's departure from the club, with Moya dropping to the bench. The vastly experienced Diego Godin also comes in in place of Gimenez.

Aside from that, Simeone has kept faith with the team that started in Germany, including an unchanged midfield unit. Carrasco has flourished since moving to the Spanish capital, while Saul, Gabi and Koke have been linchpins of the success Simeone has achieved at the Vicente Calderon. Further back, Vrsaljko and Filipe Luis will operate on both defensive flanks once again, while Savic retains his spot at the heart of the defence.

As for Barcelona, there is no surprise to see that the deadly striking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all start once again, although they haven't quite hit the heights of last season so far this time around. Neymar in particular has been struggling to keep up with the other two in the goalscoring stakes, finding the back of the net just six times in La Liga this term. Questions have been asked about the Brazilian's form this season, but there is no doubting that he has the ability to be a match-winner.

A match-winner is exactly what Lionel Messi was for Barcelona last time out as they scraped past Leganes courtesy of the Argentine master, who leads the La Liga scoring charts this season with 19 goals. He has scored 26 times against Atletico Madrid across all competitions throughout his career, making them his second favourite opponents after only Sevilla (27). Messi has also scored 12 times at the Vicente Calderon - 11 of which have come against Atletico, with the exception coming in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao in 2012.

If Neymar or Messi don't get you, Suarez most likely will. The Uruguayan is only one goal behind Messi in the scoring stakes this season and found the back of the net in both legs of the recent Copa del Rey tie between these two teams. Suarez has scored five goals in his last six matches against Madrid opposition and will be confident of making his mark again this afternoon. Barca may not have been quite at their best this term, but with those three up front they are always capable of blowing any team away.

Aside from the front three, there are plenty of notable returns for Barca today as the likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta all come back into the starting XI following last weekend's scare against Leganes. Lucas Digne, Ivan Rakitic and Andre Gomes all drop to the bench to make room for the returning trio as Jeremy Mathieu switches over to left-back from his central role. It is pretty much a full strength Barca side today.

Of course, coming up against this star-studded Barcelona side is nothing new for the Atletico Madrid players, who have done battle with their Catalan rivals across all competitions plenty of times in recent years. However, Barcelona seem to have their number when it comes to La Liga and while Diego Simeone deserves huge credit for what he has done for the club, the league scalp of Barca is one prize that he is yet to capture.

Indeed, this is Simeone's 300th match in charge of Atletico across all competitions, and in all of that time he has never beaten Barcelona in La Liga. The two sides have met 13 times in the league since his arrival, with Atletico only managing to claim three points from a possible 39 in that time - a surprisingly poor record considering how well they have done under the Argentine boss. Barca are one of only two La Liga teams Simeone has never beaten, with Alaves having drawn both previous games against his Atletico side.

What better occasion than his 300th match and Atletico's last league game against Barcelona here at the Vicente Calderon to end that hoodoo? La Rojiblancos will move stadium at the end of the season and, considering Barcelona's perilous position in their Champions League tie with PSG, this is very likely to be the last time they ever visit the stadium. Atletico fans are sure to make it an imposing atmosphere to match the occasion, but on the pitch only a win will do if they harbour any serious hopes of catching the top three.

Atletico are more likely to be looking over their shoulders rather than chasing down those ahead of them right now, though. Real Sociedad's win on Friday means that they are now just a point behind the final Champions League spot, and another defeat for Atletico today would see the gap to the top three grow to seven. Atletico's number one priority right now will be to secure Champions League football next season.

The hosts come into this match in decent enough form having not been beaten in the league since December 12 - an eight-match undefeated streak which includes six wins and two draws. That is a marked improvement on a run of just two wins from eight games which preceded their current run, and another victory this afternoon would give them four in a row in La Liga for the first time this season. In all competitions they have only been beaten once in their last 11 outings, although that did come against Barcelona here at the Vicente Calderon.

As ever, Atletico's success has been largely built on a solid defence, with only Villarreal having conceded fewer in La Liga this season. Atletico have kept a league-high 12 clean sheets from their 23 outings, while only Barcelona have conceded fewer goals in front of their own fans too. Atletico actually have a better home record than Barca this season, but it is still only the fourth-best in the division, with Real Madrid, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao all having amassed more points.

Atletico remain incredibly difficult to beat on home soil, though, as their record of just one home league loss in their last 28 outings is testament to. It is a run which includes 22 wins and stretches all the way back to September 2015, with the only blip in that time coming in a 3-0 defeat to city rivals Real Madrid in November. That result was one of four defeats Atletico have suffered against fellow teams in the top six this season, with their record in that mini-league being by far the worst. They have picked up just one point from a possible 15 against their rivals for a European place, although that solitary draw did come against Barcelona.

In contrast to that, Barcelona are unbeaten in matches against their top-six rivals this season, although they have also only won one of their five games in that mini-league, drawing the remaining four. Barca have only lost two league games all season, and both were surprise defeats at the hands of Alaves and Celta Vigo. It is the team's performances across the whole season which have caused concern amongst the fans, though, resulting in speculation that Luis Enrique's time at the club is limited.

The Barca board have publicly backed Enrique to continue beyond the end of the current campaign, when his contract expires, but it is looking increasingly like he will leave and failure to win La Liga this season will not help matters at all. It looks as though the club will crash out of the Champions League in the last 16 for the first time in a decade and, while they have reached the Copa del Rey final yet again, that trophy may not be enough to save Enrique if Madrid pip them to the title.

Considering Enrique won the treble in his first season at the helm and backed that up with a domestic double last term, it is perhaps harsh that a section of the supporters have begun to boo their former captain, but those are the high standards Barca have set themselves in recent years. A 4-0 defeat to PSG is deemed entirely unacceptable, while the performance in last weekend's 2-1 win over lowly Leganes also drew criticism, with only Messi's late penalty saving his side from more dropped points.

As it turned out, that 90th-minute spot kick could prove to be a pivotal point in the season, with Real Madrid failing to make the most of their first game in hand when they were beaten by Valencia in midweek. That rare slip-up from Los Blancos - only their second league defeat of the season - leaves Barca just one point behind their great rivals coming into this game and, with goal difference on their side, even a draw will send them above joint leaders Real Madrid and Sevilla. In the longer term, though, a draw is unlikely to be good enough, with Madrid in action against Villarreal later today and then having one more game in hand on top of that too.

Barcelona's current unbeaten run of 16 La Liga games is the joint longest in Europe's top five divisions, alongside Manchester United, and stretches back to October 2 when they were beaten 4-3 by Celta Vigo. In all competitions Barca have also only lost two of their last 24 outings, but it is the seven draws in that time which have frustrated the fans as much as the defeats. The team lack the fluidity they enjoyed last season and certainly don't look as unstoppable as they have in the past.

It hasn't helped that Barcelona have been far from their best at the Camp Nou this term, with Enrique's side actually amassing more points on their travels than in front of their own fans. Indeed, Barca have comfortably the best away record in La Liga this season, picking up six points more than anyone else on the road this term before this weekend's fixtures. They are also the top scorers away from home this season and, stretching even further back, have scored 48 goals in their last 15 La Liga games - an average of 3.2 per match.

Barca are unbeaten in their last eight La Liga away games, winning five and drawing three, but still they lack a bit of consistency on the road. They have not won back-to-back away league games since November, and in all competitions their most recent visit anywhere resulted in the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. Another defeat today would condemn them to back-to-back away losses for the first time since April.

PREDICTION: This is a very tough one to call. Atletico are always a tough team to back against simply because they are so hard to beat, but Barcelona do seem to have their number and won here as recently as February 1. Some big names have returned for the visitors and they will be desperate to capitalise on Madrid's midweek slip-up, so I'm going to go for a 2-1 away win.

As already mentioned, Barcelona have held the advantage over Atletico Madrid in this fixture recently, going 13 La Liga games without defeat to SImeone's side - their best ever run against a team from Madrid. Their most recent visit here in the league came in September 2015 when they were forced to come from behind after Fernando Torres had opened the scoring shortly after half time. Atletico's lead lasted just four minutes on that occasions before Neymar equalised, and Messi secured a 2-1 Barca win 13 minutes from time.

It was the same score when Barca visited in the Copa del Rey at the start of this month, and once again it was a Messi goal which proved to be the winner. Suarez gave his side an early lead before Messi doubled it, while Griezmann's strike just before the hour mark gave Atletico hope going into the return leg. Suarez opened the scoring in that one too, and Gameiro's late equaliser at the Camp Nou was not enough to overturn the aggregate deficit.

Barca are now unbeaten in their last six visits to the Vicente Calderon, winning five and drawing one, and should they avoid defeat again today then it would be their longest ever unbeaten streak at the stadium - not a bad way to sign off from their time there.

Right, the players are out and we're just about ready to go here! It is one of the standout games of the Spanish football calendar, made all the more special by it being Barca's last visit to this famous stadium.

KICKOFF: Here we go then! Atletico get us underway at the Vicente Calderon!

Interestingly, Barcelona seem to have opted for a three-man defence from the start here, with Sergi Roberto pushing forward on the right flank and Mathieu tucking inside.

CHANCE! Almost a perfect chance for Atletico with their first meaningful attack! Carrasco steals in at the back post behind Sergi Roberto and is found by a clipped cross from the right flank. Carrasco gets his finish all wrong, though, and nothing comes of it.

CHANCE! Another big chance for Atletico as Umtiti fails to deal with a corner into the box and the ball falls at the feet of Godin, but he cannot fire home from inside the area.

Barcelona have their first chance to attack with a free kick in a decent crossing position, but for once Messi's delivery lets him down and he puts it over the head of Pique at the back post.

SHOT! You just cannot give these Barcelona attackers a sniff. Suarez brilliantly battles his way past Savic before giving the ball to Messi, whose initial pass is cut out. Messi is immediately on to the rebound, though, and fires a shot over the crossbar.

As you would expect, everything is being fiercely contested both by the players on the field and the fans in the stadium here. This is shaping up to be a real battle, which may suit Atletico most.

It is quite a strange formation that Barcelona are playing here. The defensive three are still playing with plenty of width and Sergi Roberto is drifting inside when they have the ball. Intriguing system from Luis Enrique.

As part of that formation, Neymar is playing a little deeper than usual, but he picks the ball up here and dribbles it past a couple of defenders on his way into a crossing position. His eventual delivery is poor, but that is the first we have really seen of the Brazilian today.

SAVE! Poor from Ter Stegen as his clearance puts Barcelona under a lot of pressure. A cross is aimed towards Carrasco at the back post, but Gameiro doesn't hear his shout and is at full stretch to get his foot to the ball when he should have left it. He still manages to divert it to Gabi on the edge of the box, but his shot is straight at the keeper.

CHANCE! Another chance for the home side as Umtiti's header only drops to Griezmann in a good position and the Atletico striker fires a low effort towards the near post, but Umtiti sticks out a foot to block it before it can test the keeper.

Simeone will be happy with what he has seen from his side in this opening 20 minutes. They have looked much more likely to score, particularly in the past five minutes or so when it has been backs-to-the-wall stuff for Barcelona. They just cannot get out at the moment!

The main concern for Atletico right now is that they have not been able to get a goal in this period when they have been on top. They have been the better team so far but the scoreline does not indicate that.

I must say, I'm not entirely convinced by Barcelona's tactics so far. Sergi Roberto has not provided anything going forward so far, and his advanced position has left space behind him on a couple of occasions already.

Atletico are not letting Barcelona play their usual game here. They are pressing high and preventing the visitors from dominating possession, while Barca's passing accuracy is a long way below what we are used to seeing from them.

SAVE! Brilliant save from Ter Stegen to keep Barcelona level in this one! Griezmann lets fly with his supposedly weaker right foot, but he really catches hold of it and it is flying towards the top corner. Ter Stegen gets across and tips it over the crossbar, though.

It is not often that you see Barcelona struggling to get out of their own half for such a prolonged period. Neymar, Suarez and Messi have been periphery figures at best so far today.

CHANCES! Just as I say that, Barcelona finally find space to attack and very nearly break the deadlock! Messi rolls the ball into the path of Neymar, who advances into the box before dropping it back to the Argentine. His low strike is saved by Oblak but only into the path of Suarez, who scrambles for it alongside Luis. Luis clears it only against his own post before Suarez nods the rebound home, but the whistle has gone before that for a foul by the Uruguayan.

That was a big warning shot for Atletico. The hosts have kept that front three quiet for the majority of the game so far, but it only takes a moment for them to burst into life and, if Atletico can't make the most of their own time on top, then that could be the difference in this match.

Having seen the replay of that goalmouth scramble again, it looks as though the foul was taken for a handball against Suarez in the chaos that followed Oblak's save. It was a very slight one, but he certainly gained an advantage from it so it is a good decision from the referee.

Another ball from the right finds Carrasco in space at the back post once again, but his header back inside is collected by Ter Stegen.

CHANCE! Yet again Atletico get in down that left channel as a through-ball releases Griezmann in the box, but Ter Stegen reads it brilliantly and intercepts the resulting pass back inside. He could have had egg on his face if Griezmann had gone for goal at the near post, but it was brilliant goalkeeping.

SHOT! Barca get the ball straight up to the other end and Suarez cuts inside from the left flank, only to fire his effort narrowly over from 20 yards out.

Barcelona are just beginning to grow into this game a little more, which will be ominous for Atletico. They could be made to rue not scoring when they had the chances earlier in this one.

SAVE! Chance for Barca as Suarez wins a free kick in a very dangerous position. Messi, as ever, is over it and curls one towards the far top corner, but Oblak is across to make a fine save, tipping it over the crossbar.

Just five minutes remain of this first half now, and it has flown by. Atletico have been the better side, but Barca are beginning to settle now and this one is still very much on a knife edge. Can either side strike the first blow before half time?

The possession stats suggest that Barca have had 61% of the ball in this match, but it certainly doesn't seem like that. Certainly, Atletico have enjoyed more of the ball in dangerous positions, although that tide is starting to turn now.

CHANCE! Barcelona almost break the deadlock right on the stroke of half time. Pique towers over everyone else in the area to get his head to a corner, but Oblak's decision to stay on his line proves to be a good one as he makes a crucial save.

HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 0-0 Barcelona

The referee brings an end to the first half at the Vicente Calderon, then, and we're still goalless between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona despite an entertaining 45 minutes of football. Atletico have been the better team for the most part, but they have been unable to break the deadlock and the attacking talent of Barca began to show towards the end of the half. It is still anyone's game here!

Atletico managed to keep the ball in the Barcelona half for the majority of the first half, preventing the visitors from playing their usual game. However, it is still Barca who have arguably created the best chances, with Pique seeing a towering header saved by Oblak towards the end of the half and Suarez seeing a header of his own disallowed after Oblak had kept out a low Messi strike. The Atletico keeper was also needed to pull of a fine one-handed stop to deny Messi's free kick.

Had Barca gone into the break ahead then it would have been an undeserved lead, though, as Atletico created most of the early chances in the game. Carrasco and Godin both failed to hit the target from decent positions inside the opening five minutes. Gabi and Griezmann have both had sights of goal themselves, but Ter Stegen has been equal to everything thrown at him so far.

KICKOFF: Barcelona get us back underway for this second half - the final 45 minutes of league football they will ever play at the Vicente Calderon!

CHANCE! Huge, huge chance for Barcelona! Messi slides a lovely pass into the path of Suarez and, with only the keeper to beat, you are just expecting the net to bulge. However, the Uruguayan seems to rush his shot and steers a poor effort a few yards wide. Poor finish from a man who usually delivers from that position.

Nice football from Atletico down the right flank as a one-two creates a good crossing position. Once again the delivery is aimed towards Carrasco at the far post, but this time Sergi Roberto is well placed to clear the danger, winning a free kick in the process.

CHANCE! Almost the opening goal for Atletico as they crank up the tempo with a through-ball down the left channel for Griezmann. This time he opts against the pass across goal and instead shoots towards the near post, but Ter Stegen has his angles right and makes the save. Moments later the Barca keeper makes a much more routine save to deny Gabi's tame strike.

YELLOW CARD! The first card of the game is shown to Busquets, and he can have no complaints for a sliding challenge on Griezmann. Cynical and a poor challenge anyway.

CHANCE! Where is the Barcelona defence here? Gabi's floated free kick from deep finds Vrsaljko is so much space down the right flank, and he has the time to just hang his cross up into the middle. Godin rises highest to loop a header towards goal, but it lands on the roof of the net.

YELLOW CARD! I suspect the cards will begin to flow more freely. Saul Niguez is the second person in the book for an untidy challenge on Neymar.

Barcelona are enjoying quite possibly their longest and best spell of possession of the match right now. It is the first real spell of pressure Atletico have had to face, and it isn't even taking place inside their third.

Still Batca apply the pressure with a couple of corners in quick succession, but Atletico hold firm and the danger passes without Oblak having anything to do.

This match is so finely poised with less than half an hour remaining. Victory would be huge for both sides today so I suspect the match may begin to open up more and more as the seconds tick by.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 0-1 Barcelona (Rafinha)

Barcelona have the breakthrough! It is a messy, messy goal, but Barca's celebrations suggest that they do not care one bit. Atletico are defending deep inside their own half and make a couple of blocks from attempted Barcelona shots. Suarez is one of those to see his effort strike a defender, but the ball then drops into the path of Rafinha, who sweeps it past the keeper.

YELLOW CARD! Savic was shown a yellow card in the aftermath of that goal, presumably for a word out of place, but I'm not entirely sure what he would be complaining about.

ATLETICO MADRID SUB: The hosts make their first change of the match as Carrasco is replaced by Fernando Torres.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona (Diego Godin)

What a response from Atletico! They are back level just six minutes after falling behind, and it is a second goal of the season for Godin. Koke swings in a free kick from the left flank and Godin gets a crucial touch to the ball which diverts it past Ter Stegen. It was the slightest touch, but it made all the difference.

BARCELONA SUB: Barca make a change in the wake of that goal as Ivan Rakitic replaces Iniesta.

ATLETICO MADRID SUB: The hosts make another change of their own, with Angel Correa coming on in place of Gameiro.

YELLOW CARD! Gabi is the latest player in the book for a foul on Rakitic, although that is more down to the totting-up offence.

YELLOW CARD! Correa is straight into the book himself for a mistimed challenge on Mathieu.

Mathieu looks to have twisted his ankle during that challenge and he may not be able to continue here.

BARCELONA SUB: Sure enough, Mathieu limps off to be replaced by Lucas Digne.

Barca win another free kick in a decent position, but this time it is just out of shooting range and Messi's delivery is comfortably cleared by Godin.

Almost a chance for Barca down the right flank as Suarez scrambles past one defender and pulls the ball back towards Messi, but it is very good defending from Savic to clear the danger.

YELLOW CARD! Messi is the latest player to be shown a card, seemingly for a word out of place.

BARCELONA SUB: A third and final change from the visitors sees Andre Gomes replace Sergi Roberto.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona (Lionel Messi)

Cometh the hour, cometh the man! Lionel Messi looks to have saved his side once again here with what could very well be the winner in the dying stages here! It is another messy goal, if you'll pardon the pun, but once again Barca don't care. After seeing one cross into the box break down, Barca keep it alive and Umtiti holds on to it inside the box. He gives it to Rakitic, who in turn feeds it back to Messi in a bit of space. Even then it is not straightforward as Messi's initial shot is blocked, but he is quickest to react to the loose ball and pokes it past Oblak.

There will be four minutes of added time at the end of this match.

Hugely important piece of defending from Pique as he hooks the ball away from Torres in the area just as the Atletico striker was about to pull the trigger!

FULL TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Barcelona

Messi to the rescue once again. The man who has now scored 27 career goals against Atletico gets the final say at the Vicente Calderon on his side's final ever visit to the stadium with an 87th-minute goal which could prove crucial for their title hopes. Diego Godin had earlier cancelled out a Rafinha opener before Messi poked home the late winner which sends Barca two points clear at the top of the table.

Right, that is all we have time for this evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for today's game as Barcelona move top of the table courtesy of a dramatic late Messi winner which hands them a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid. I will leave you with our match report, and be sure to check back in later to see whether Real Madrid can respond. Coverage of their clash with Villarreal starts at 6.45pm. Until then, though, it is goodbye from me!
