Alex McLeish insists that Darren Bent is not for sale in the January transfer window.

Alex McLeish has dismissed reports that he could sell main Aston Villa striker Darren Bent in the January transfer window.

Bent has scored 14 goals in 31 games since becoming the club's record signing from Sunderland at the beginning of the year.

There have been reports of a falling out between the England striker and McLeish, although Bent has insisted that he is committed to the club. The Scottish manager has said that selling Bent would send out the wrong message.

"A striker of Darren's ability would be difficult to replace," said McLeish.

"His goals last season were a vital part of Villa's season in terms of keeping them up. I wouldn't think anybody can afford Darren. I wouldn't think so.

"It would send out the wrong message unless we went out and signed Luis Suarez or something. Even suspended for eight games, I'd have him."

Bent joined Villa for an initial fee of £18m, potentially rising to £24m.
