Emmanuel Petit: 'Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool better than Arsenal's Invincibles'

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes that the current Liverpool side are even more impressive than Arsene Wenger's 'Invincibles' from 2003-04.

Emmanuel Petit has claimed that the current Liverpool side are better than the Arsenal team which went 49 games and an entire Premier League season unbeaten.

Jurgen Klopp's men have shattered a string of records already in 2019-20, amassing the highest points tally after 29 games of a season in the history of any of Europe's top five leagues and building an unprecedented 25-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

One achievement which they can no longer emulate is Arsenal's unbeaten 2003-04 campaign courtesy of their defeat to Watford last month, although they are well on course to smash the Invincibles' points tally of 90 having already amassed 82 with nine games remaining.

Petit played with a number of the Arsenal players who would go on to secure their place in English football folklore before he left the club in 2000, but he believes that Klopp's Liverpool have "something special" which Arsene Wenger's team did not.

"I have huge respect for my old teammates, but when I look at Liverpool, and what they have been doing for the past two years... People are looking at them now because last year they won a European trophy, but really they have been like this for the past two or three years," Petit told The Mirror.

"It's amazing what they are doing - it is rare to see a team winning so many games and being so dominant against their opponents all the time. They were both great teams in history, but for me this Liverpool team have something special. It is hard to explain what I feel when I look at Liverpool, but I don't remember thinking the same way when I was looking at the Invincibles.

"They have impressed me more than Arsenal's Invincibles. I am pretty sure Arsenal fans won't be happy with that. But I have to be honest. When I look at this team, the motivation, the intensity, so many talented players. Something is different with them."

Liverpool's defeat to Watford ended a 44-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, which is second only to Arsenal's 49-game run in English top-flight history.
