Arsene Wenger says that he wants to advance from the knockout stages of the Champions League as group winners.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that he wants to finish top of Group B despite already advancing to the knockout stages of the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Gunners progressed from the group stages after goals from Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski earned the North Londoners a 2-0 win over Montpellier HSC at the Emirates.

The capital club currently trail table-topping Schalke 04 in Group B, and Wenger wants to do all he can in their last game against Olympiakos to finish as group winners.

"We will play the last game to finish top of the group," said Wenger.

"When you look at some of the other groups you don't know if first or second is better, but statistically it is always better to finish first and that's what we want to do.

"Thirteen times in a row we have qualified for the last 16 – I'm very proud. It's not as easy as it appears, because if you look across Europe not many teams do it."

Arsenal travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
