Vern Cotter upbeat despite Scotland defeat to New Zealand

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter insists that his players can take plenty of positives from their 24-16 defeat to New Zealand.

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter has insisted that there are plenty of positives to take from his side's narrow defeat to New Zealand.

The Scots ran the world champions close at Murrayfield on Saturday, but the All Blacks eventually came through 24-16 to make it three consecutive wins on their tour of the Northern Hemisphere.

Despite seeing his team fall short, Cotter believes that Scotland can be proud of their determined performance.

"We got close but we didn't get there so we have to say we are disappointed," he told Sky Sports News. "But when you look at the content of what the players did out there, it's hard for a coach to be unhappy when you see that effort, desire and determination.

"Our defence was excellent. Apart from a couple of plays, everybody put their hands up and really led the team. I feel for the players. We always knew this game was going to give us things and I think it gave us a lot of positives."

Scotland are back in action on November 22 when they entertain Tonga.
