December 23 final for 2022 World Cup in Qatar 'looking increasingly likely'

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke confirms that they are keen for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar to be played on December 23 despite the Premier League's protests.

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke has confirmed that it is looking increasingly likely that the 2022 World Cup final will be played on December 23.

It was revealed on Tuesday that FIFA's task force were recommending that the tournament in Qatar be moved to the winter to avoid their hot summer temperatures.

The Premier League are concerned that a final so close to Christmas would disrupt their traditional festive fixtures and favour the alternative December 18 date.

However, Valcke said at a Wednesday press conference in Doha that UEFA and other governing bodies are keen on finishing the tournament on the day prior to Christmas Eve.

A later start date for the tournament, which is expected to be played over 28 days rather than the usual 31 or 32, would limit the impact on UEFA's Champions League schedule.
