FIFA rule out compensation for clubs and leagues for Qatar 2022 World Cup

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke rules out paying compensation to those clubs and leagues disrupted by the plans to move the Qatar 2022 World Cup to the winter.

General secretary Jerome Valcke has ruled out FIFA paying compensation to those clubs and leagues disrupted by the plans for the winter World Cup in Qatar.

A FIFA task force announced on Tuesday that they are recommending the 2022 tournament be played in November and December to avoid Qatar's hot summer temperatures.

Valcke is unapologetic over the impact that this will have on Europe's leagues and insists that they have enough time to overcome the logistical difficulties.

"Why are we talking about compensation? It's happening once, we're not destroying football," he said at a news conference in Doha on Wednesday.

"Why should we apologise to the clubs? We have had an agreement with the clubs that they are part of the beneficiaries. It was $40m (£26m) in 2010 and $70m (£45m) in 2014. We are bringing all our people to enjoy the sporting and financial results of the World Cup."

FIFA's executive committee will meet in Zurich next month to ratify the suggestion of the task force.
