Tony Cascarino and Jason Cundy believe Tottenham Hotspur made a "mistake" in keeping hold of Harry Kane this summer and feel he has now become a "problem" for the club.

Former Premier League footballers Tony Cascarino and Jason Cundy believe Tottenham Hotspur made a "mistake" in keeping hold of Harry Kane this summer, and feel the striker has now become a "problem" for the club.

After a chaotic summer of uncertainty in the transfer window, the 28-year-old eventually stayed put in North London, where he has struggled to hit the ground running so far this campaign.

Kane was denied his dream move to Manchester City as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy refused to sell the striker, who has three years remaining on his contract, though both Cascarino and Cundy feel this was the wrong decision.

"I think Levy has made a mistake – I think he should have let him go. Kane has played his last three games like his mind is scrambled," former Chelsea striker Cascarino told talkSPORT.

"You can play badly at any given time, but not someone of Kane's standard. Is it a coincidence that over the last three games he's been a bit of a non-event? I think he's disillusioned already. I think it's going to be difficult for him."

Former Spurs and Chelsea defender Cundy also said: "Kane is an ever-growing story and it's a problem for Spurs. I think he's a problem.

"It's an unfortunate situation for everyone concerned that there wasn't a resolution to it. Mentally, I think he left Spurs. He went on holiday and he clearly wanted it sorted out. And it didn't happen. Levy dug his heels in, but what has he really achieved?"

Kane, who has failed to score in his opening four Premier League matches so far this season, will be in contention to start in Tottenham's EFL Cup tie with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday, before he and his teammates prepare for the North London derby away against Arsenal on Sunday.
