Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick on Real Madrid's final league visit to the Vicente Calderon to send his side four points clear at the top of La Liga this evening.

The opener came via a free kick that struck Raphael Varane on the way though, wrong-footing Jan Oblak in the Atletico Madrid goal.

Ronaldo then scored twice in six second-half minutes to seal the points, first from the spot and then tapping home Gareth Bale's cross at the back post.

Find out how all of the action unfolded courtesy of Sports Mole's live updates below.

Good evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for tonight's huge Madrid derby between Atletico and Real at the Vicente Calderon! Barcelona's slipped up at home to nine-man Malaga earlier this afternoon, putting even more importance on tonight's clash - the first time these two sides have met since May's Champions League final. We have no time to waste with kickoff just minutes away, so let's hope for an entertaining contest!

KICKOFF! Here we go then! Real get us underway at the Vicente Calderon for the first Madrid derby of the season!

Real Madrid have made the brighter start to this match, winning an early corner here which Godin does well to clear. No real chances just yet.

Atletico win a free kick at the other end of the field in a good attacking position. He whips a dangerous ball into the middle, but Marcelo does well to clear it deep inside his own area.

SHOT! Half a chance for Atletico in the opening 10 minutes as Saul makes a clever run in behind the defence. He is duly picked out with a chipped through-ball, but his acrobatic volley goes wide of the near post.

CHANCE! Oh my word, what a save from Oblak! Ronaldo thinks that he has given his side the lead with a towering header which he meets perfectly and steers downwards towards the bottom corner. However, Oblak just about keeps it out with a fantastic save before it is cleared behind for a corner. Ronaldo thinks it is over the line, but the referee disagrees. No goalline technology in La Liga, of course!

Having seen a few replays now, it does appear that Oblak managed to keep it out. His whole body was behind the line, but crucially he prevented the ball from going over too. Gabi also deserves huge credit for a goal-saving challenge on Ronaldo from the rebound.

Lovely piece of defending from Marcelo as he pulls out a piece of Brazilian skill inside his own area to deal with a dangerous situation after Griezmann had hooked the ball through. Cool as you like.

SAVE! Another sight of goal for the visitors here as Atletico fail to clear their lines on the edge of the box. The ball eventually comes to Modric, who manoeuvres his way into a shooting position, but his low strike is kept out by Oblak.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid (Cristiano Ronaldo)

First blood to Real Madrid! It is Cristiano Ronaldo who gets his 16th goal in the Madrid derby, but he needs a helping hand to do it. The striker lines up a free kick from some 30 yards out, but if the wall does its job then it would get no further. Instead it breaks the ball bounces off Savic and in, with Oblak beaten by the deflection.

YELLOW CARD! Gabi is the first player in the book for a block tackle on Modric. I suspect he won't be the last.

Ronaldo hasn't had the best of times in the Madrid derby of late - ignoring the small matter of scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final in May for a moment - but he is now just one goal behind Alfredo Di Stefano for goals against Atletico.

CHANCE! A chance for Real and Ronaldo to double their tallies for the evening as the goalscorer runs on to a clever reverse pass from Isco before turning brilliant past Godin, but he can't get enough on his finish and Oblak makes the save.

This match is being played at a really good tempo, but Atletico are struggling to get going in attack. Griezmann and Torres haven't had a sniff so far, and Real's defence deserves a lot of credit for that.

Atletico are getting the ball in plenty of decent attacking positions, but Navas has had so little to do in the visiting goal so far this half. The hosts need to improve going forward and come up with more of a cutting edge in the final third.

HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid

It is Real who lead the Madrid derby at the halfway stage, then, and they deserve their advantage too. They have been on top, with Atletico really struggling to creating anything of note going forward. Ronaldo's free kick, which took a touch off Varane on the way through, is the difference as things stand, while Oblak has been forced into a couple of other saves from the Portuguese star. Simeone needs more from his side in the second half if they are to get back into this one.

KICKOFF: Atletico get us back underway for the second half at the Vicente Calderon. Can they get back into this match?

CLOSE! Almost a spectacular equaliser for Atletico as Lucas Vazquez gives the ball away right on the edge of the box. Carrasco is the man who tries to take advantage with a curling effort towards the top corner from 25 yards, but it floats inches past the angle.

CHANCE! Another chance for Atletico as Griezmann latches on to a clever reverse pass down the left channel. The angle is very much against the Frenchman, though, and he looks for the cross rather than shooting, sending the ball across the face of goal and all the way through.

SAVE! Atletico are piling the pressure on now! Modric gives the ball away this time and Griezmann looks to take the shot early from range, but he doesn't catch the keeper out. That is a first shot on target for the hosts, though.

This has been so much better from Atletico in the second half so far. They are looking much more threatening in the final third and are playing with a lot more intensity now too. This one is shaping up quite nicely!

ATLETICO SUBS: Two changes for Atletico here as Correa and Gameiro come on in place of Gabi and Torres.

YELLOW CARDS! Ronaldo and Koke both go into the book for a square up inside the Atletico box. Both players had their heads against each other, but the flash point was quickly calmed down.

SAVE! More work for Navas to do here, but it is as simple as it gets for the Madrid keeper. The ball breaks to Carrasco, who goes for goal, but it trickles easily into the arms of the keeper.

SAVE! This time it is Jan Oblak who makes a save at the other end, but this time it is a smarter one. Isco caught his first-time volley fairly well and, although it may have been going wide, Oblak could take no chances and turned it behind.

PENALTY TO REAL MADRID!

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 0-2 Real Madrid (Cristiano Ronaldo, penalty)

Game over? Ronaldo doubles Real Madrid's lead over their city rivals from the spot having won the penalty himself. It was a booming header upfield from Varane that sent the Portuguese forward through, but Savic was still the favourite to get it. The defender completely missed the ball when trying to hook it away, though, catching Ronaldo, who duly went down. The striker is as cool as you like from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way to double his personal tally.

SAVE! Atletico look for an immediate response as Carrasco turns into a bit of space before getting a shot away, but once again he doesn't put enough on it to really trouble Navas.

GOAL! Atletico Madrid 0-3 Real Madrid (Cristiano Ronaldo)

If it wasn't over at two, it is now. Ronaldo has a hat-trick away to Atletico Madrid to completely kill the game off, and perhaps kill Atletico's title challenge off too. Bale streaks clear down the left channel and no-one can catch him before he rolls the ball across goal for Ronaldo to tap home at the far post. Who said his powers were waning?

YELLOW CARD! Lucas Vazquez goes into the book for a heavy challenge in the corner.

REAL MADRID SUB: The visitors make a chance here as Karim Benzema replaces Isco. Not a bad sub to be able to bring on at 3-0 up!

REAL MADRID SUB: Job done for Ronaldo. He hits a hat-trick and now makes way for a well-earned rest to be replaced by James Rodriguez.

YELLOW CARD! Juanfran is the latest Atletico player in the book as they grow more and more frustrated. This has been a day to forget for Simeone's side.

REAL MADRID SUB: A third and final change for the visitors as Marco Asensio replaces Lucas Vazquez.

CHANCE! Good chance for Real to make it four here as they hit the hosts on the break. Carvajal clips a ball back into the middle for Modric, but he can't keep his header down.

There will be two minutes of added time at the end of this match.

CHANCE! Big chance for an Atletico consolation as Carrasco jinks his way into shooting space inside the box, but Navas comes out to thwart him.

FULL TIME: Atletico Madrid 0-3 Real Madrid

That is all we have time for this evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for a memorable match as Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 39th Real Madrid hat-trick to help Los Blancos to a 3-0 win over Atletico in the Madrid derby. I will leave you with our match report. Goodbye!
