Ex-Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan joins Norwich City

Former Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan joins Norwich City as a first-team coach.

Norwich City have announced that former Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan has joined the club as first-team coach.

The 52-year-old has been out of work since leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 2013, shortly after Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement from management.

During Phelan's five-year stint as Ferguson's right-hand man, United won three Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and reached two Champions League finals.

From today, Phelan, who held coaching roles at Norwich back in the 1990s, will work alongside Gary Holt as part of Neil Adams's backroom staff at the Championship club.

Phelan told the club's official website: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to return to Carrow Road. I have many fond memories and am looking forward to helping Neil and the team to progress and ultimately getting back into the Premier League where they deserve to be."

Adams added: "I'm delighted to bring in someone with Mike's experience to work with myself, Gary Holt, and the rest of the coaching staff. He's someone who has a strong connection with Norwich City and I know him well, having worked with him before when I was a player and he was coaching here."

Phelan spent four years playing for Norwich during his career.
